A few weeks ago I was contacted by LA weekly - the free weekly paper for the Los Angeles area, to do a cover illustration for an interesting article. The story was about an FBI investigation into a telemarketing scam that involved several low budget movies. The film companies used "boiler rooms" to cold-call victims across the country and entice them to invest in movies. Much of the money went to commissions for the telemarketers or into the pockets of the film company executives. The total losses are about $25 million. The US Attorney's office has charged 18 people -- including movie producers -- with mail and wire fraud. Two of the suspects committed suicide.
I tried to make a really clear and symbolic image that combines to ideas 'crime' with 'film'. Below are the sketches, final illustration and final cover design:
