I was asked to make the opening illustration for this month's Mixed Media section of Mother Jones. The article dealt with the new wave of survival/nature shows, such as Man Versus Wild or Dual Survival. The writer was trying to figure out why it is that these shows are so immensly popular, his theory - they speak to something primal in us, that yarns for a lost connection with nature.
I sent out a series of sketches to AD Carolyn Perot, who went with the most humorous option - showing a preppy hipster gazing into his primordial twin on TV. Humor always wins people! Below are the sketches for the piece:
