Last week I was commissioned to do an illustration for the cover of the Washington Post Health & Science section. The issue was titled 'Aging Well' - the AD suggested that I incorporate the text into the illustration. I was to work from three different articles, each dealing with a different subject of aging; The final days before death, new discoveries on the genetic aspects of aging and the issue with aging veterans. Rather then illustrate a specific article I was trying to convey the general subject and theme of the texts, I didn't want to make an image that is too dark and morbid since the title was 'Aging Well' (also editors seem to veer away from the 'darker' images with tricky subjects like this. The AD chose the pill box concept and we figured out a way to make it interact in a graphic and fun way with the page and text. Here's the result:
